End of an Era 1930 - 2013
The last County Kildare VEC committee meeting took place in the Glenview Hotel, Wicklow on Thursday, June 27th 2013. The committee meeting was chaired by Cllr. Mark Wall and tributes were paid to the CEO, Mr Sean Ashe of his stewardship of Kildare VEC over the last 11 years and congratulations were extended to him on his appointment as the first CEO for Kildare and Wicklow Education and Training Board. For 83 years County Kildare VEC has played a pivotal role in the education of young people as well as adults who returned to education. County Kildare VEC ceased to exist after June 30th 2013.
County Kildare VEC was the largest educational provider in the county providing educational opportunities for learning from the ‘cradle to the grave’ through its Community National School, Second Level Schools, Post Leaving Certificate Courses (PLCs), Adult and Community Education and Youth Support Service.
The new configuration also paves the way for the establishment of SOLAS, with the dissolution of FÁS and it is expected that SOLAS will be formally established before the end of this year. ETBs will take on the majority of FÁS programmes when its training centres and services transfer to them late this year or in early 2014. Under the Act, ETBs will also be expected to help schools and education providers in areas such as capital projects, human resources, IT support, and financial and legal services.
